Joe Wong Reflection


I can certainly say Joe Wong started the decade off with a bang, just like the illegal firecrackers he joked about in his presentation. 

Joe Wong, an incredible bilingual comedian and chemist by training came to speak to Polytechnic School this past Wednesday. Alex (a fellow global scholar) and I had the privilege of introducing Mr. Wong to Poly. I greatly enjoyed his content and could definitely see how it tied into my heritage as a Chinese American. While his content was laden with comedy, it definitely addressed some more serious issues such as the immigration process to the United States, racism, the traditional Chinese upbringing, and the one child policy. Mr. Wong is younger than my parents, yet he is an American immigrant just as they are, and studied science just like they did. I see how their experiences mirror his and can appreciate how he takes the pain of his past and presents it to the audience in a digestible manner, and his witty, intelligent manner of comedy. This GIP event was wholly unique in its presentation and I look forward to more guests like Mr. Wong who will push the envelope on future presentations.

I'm still working on what it is exactly I want to do for my Capstone Project. Right now, I'm interested in researching the mental health side of global health. I feel in comparison to infectious diseases, mental health issues such as schizophrenia and depression don't get as much coverage or aren't seen as significant when they have massive impact from the standpoint of quality of life. Health is defined as a well-being of both body and mind: not just getting the right nutrition and exercise, but also being mentally stable and happy. Books I've read this summer for global education

Hello everyone, I wanted to talk a bit about the books I've read over the summer that have relevance to being educated about global issues. This will be a working document for a bit, as the books on the list of books I am working on will steadily migrate to the "Books I've Read" list. Also, reviews for books I have read will get steadily added. Without further ado, let's get to it! Cambodia Never Fall Down This book was recommended to our travel group to Cambodia as a means of seeing what Arn Chorn Pond had experienced under the Khmer Rouge regime. The account that Arn provides is full of detail concerning the regime and details his harrowing experience as a young musician trying to survive. I read it in a single night. I just couldn't put down the book. The account of Cambodia at that time period is so unlike anything that I have experienced or either that I am familiar with at all, and contains brutal imagery and anecdotes. Capstone Project Presentation Reflection

As of April 13th, I've finished my Capstone Project. The final form that the project was in was an online panel, but it went through a lot of changes in the process. I'll detail my process here. I started thinking about my Capstone Project in the second half of my junior year. At that point, I had no connections to organizations or concrete ideas about what the project would look like, and I was worried. I decided to focus on something related to my scientific interests, but the labs that I had worked with in the past were related to evolutionary and developmental biology and thus not well suited for a discussion of global health issues, a topic that I was interested in. I thought since Polytechnic is so close to Caltech, I might as well look into labs that tackle issues in global health and sustainability.
