Brief Capstone Update


For my Capstone Project, I have reached out to several scientists, including Jess Adkins, Michael Hoffmann, Clement Cid, Dianne Newman, and Neil Fromer, all of which work at the Resnick Institute of Sustainability at Caltech. I am planning a panel for scientists to discuss their work in sustainability, and so far, I will have Clement Cid, who works on waste treatment and sanitation presenting at Poly, though I might add one more panelist if it would improve the quality of the event.

Brave Girl Rising Reflection

Attending the screening of Brave Girl Rising was truly a distinct experience from the other GIP events I've attended, including Kalyanee Mam's screening of her documentary. Martha Adams described her efforts to create a film as something different from a documentary, and after watching her film, I certainly agree with her. Brave Girl Rising is framed through poetry and through visuals, the latter of which may not be as immediately apparent.                   I found it an interesting creative decision to use a verbal medium to describe visuals, but I can see the value behind the poetic language used to describe the setting and the experiences of Nasro, the focus of the film. The State of Science in Latin America

During my trip to Vietnam and Cambodia (which you can read about in my previous blog posts,) I had some time to read and think about what I had learned the past school year. One book that I had brought along with me was Advice for a Young Investigator, or Reglas y consejos sobre investigacion cientifica, by Santiago Ramon y Cajal, a Spanish biologist. As I was reading, I took note of how Ramon y Cajal saw Spain in a negative light pertaining to its research and development, illustrated by the quotes below. Mining Impacts in Latin America

For my work in my Spanish class: Comunidad Global En Accion, or "Global Community in Action," I have been researching the impacts of the mining industry on Latin America through the lens of human rights, which has been a major topic of discussion thus far. I'll cover some material here that I wasn't able to cover in my presentations in class. Mineral mining is a major part of the economy in Latin America. In Peru, gold is a major export, and in Cuba, the country that I focused on researching in AP Spanish Language, is an exporter of nickel. In Mexico, silver and gold are mined. However, the cost of mining these material is multifactorial and significant. Miner safety is perhaps one of the largest problems that stems from the mining industry. This comes primarily from the substances that miners are exposed to.
